Limited Viable Grid Connections Challenge Renewable Energy Sector
July 2025
Grid Reform is continuing to challenge the renewable energy sector with new viable grid connections becoming increasingly scarce. The changes have created some opportunities though with smaller projects under 5MW now being exempt from requiring a Transmission Impact Assessment (TIA). This has simplified the grid application process for sites under 5MW which should allow projects to connect sooner benefitting both developers and landowners.
However, a big health warning should come with this before developers seek to develop anywhere in the country. Some grid supply points (GSPs) are exempt from this fast-track process and therefore it is well worth dealing with grid consultants on this point before site finding is engaged.
At HK&Co we are working with a number of developers that are exploring these opportunities, looking for sites around 15 – 20 acres that are near suitable substations for the project to connect.
